First Day

A/N: Yay first post of the year, woohoo! College is terrifying and I hope you enjoy this. Let me know how life is going, etc., etc. I’d love to hear about it in the comments.

Kristy rolled over in her sleep and peeked at the clock near her bed. 7:30 am. Right on time. She rubbed her eyes open and sat up.

First day of college. It was intimidating to think about. All throughout high school, she had dreamed of college but never actually expected to end up at her top choice school, taking classes with some of the brightest kids in the nation. Butterflies in her stomach were making it hard to think.

It took several minutes longer than normal to find an outfit. The private high school she’d previously attended utilized uniforms, saving her from the daunting task of thinking in the early morning. Kristy pushed those thoughts out of the way and opted for a comfortable blue tank top and jeans.

She crept past her sleeping roommate Rebecca and walked to the cafeteria for breakfast. There were already people eating, making smoothies and having conversations. The older students’ conversations were slightly more interesting…

“Did you hear about Justin getting stopped at customs in Cairo?”

“Yeah! I heard his younger brother was trying to bring home a tarantula they’d found on the side of the road.”

… compared to those of Kristy’s fellow freshman, who spoke in short, abrupt sentences:

“What’s your first period?”

“I’ve got History in Film.”

“Oh, cool.”

“Yeah.”

Spotting a few people she’d befriended during orientation, Kristy picked up her tray and made a beeline for them. One of the girls, Lindsey, had first period Intro to Computer Science with Kristy. They could walk to class together after eating.

Maybe it would be a good first day.
